May post

Finished up senior project this month. This included mentorship and the Final presentation for an hour. So even though it was coming down to the wire I continued to broaden my knowledge on military intelligence. So as everything winds down I can see how far I have really come with not just research but experience as a whole. After learning so much I know this is the field I would like to go into for my career. In my eyes senior project, for me was a huge success and a leap forward in the right direction for me.

Blog 22: Mentorship

Content:
LIA Response to blog:
    Literal
·     Log of specific hours with a total and a description of your duties updated on the right hand side of your blog
·     Contact Name and Mentorship Place
    Interpretive
What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why? I believe just the sharing and teaching me on the jobs a soldier would do in the intel field was important but also the execution and actual practice of these jobs greatly increased my chance at success in this field.
   Applied
How has what you’ve done helped you to answer your EQ?  Please explain. Mentorship has allowed me to apply all the research I did to the closest thing to the actual job. Being able to perform tasks at the mentorship gave me a first hand understanding of my EQ and lead to my ultimate answer to the EQ.

*Please do not turn in your mentorship hours to the office.  After we collect the total list from all seniors, we will turn in one piece of paper with all hours for everybody.  It is counted as 50 hours of the 200 you need in order to graduate from I-Poly.  The 10 hours in the summer have already been added to your community service total.

Grading Criteria (May 13th)
  • 50 hours completed (50 from the academic year)
  • LIA response (submitted to your blog)
  • Essential question connection

Exit Interview

Content:
(1) What is your essential question, and what are your answers?  What is your best answer and why?
My EQ is what is the most important phase in completing the military intelligence's mission? My first answer is the processing phase because this is the phase where you decide what raw intel collected from the collection phase is useful to answer the requirement and completing the mission. My second answer is the most important phase is the directing phase because this is the most crucial phase where the MI soldier along with his platoon drafts the requirement and makes their plans for the rest of the cycle. If the requirement does not address the mission fully the mission will fail.  My third answer is the most important phase is the planning and supervising phase because this phase is always happening and the CO or commanding officer is the main soldier in this phase. The CO’s job in this phase is to supervise his troops on what they are working on, if they are doing their job write and if they are on the right track. Once the CO determines the situation he works with his men to draft a plan and he or she makes sure the men stick to that plan and do it in a timely fashion. My best answer to my essential question is the second answer which is the directing phase, due to the requirement being drafted in this phase the importance of this phase is than that of the first or third answers. Yes processing and planning and supervising are important but the directing phase sets the entire stage of the cycle
(2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?
Research from my sources which are articles, manuals, books, and interviews. The process was read manuals, books, and articles talk to my mentor and people i interviewed for clarification.
(3) What problems did you face?  How did you resolve them?
Only problems i faced are errors on my part a lot of the time. Such as not fully grasping the meaning of a word and having to go back and change it to proper word usage according to that  meaning.
(4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?
The most significant sources in my research is my mentor staff sergeant Felix and the FM 34-52 manual Intelligence Interrogation. These are so important because my mentor helps and teaches me everything he can tell me and that 34-52 manual, it explains not just interrogation or any just one topic but explains to the reader Military Intelligence as a whole.

April Post

This month i worked on a lot from independent component to Mentorship to community service. For independent component I did threat assessments and order of battles. Read up on my manuals to further enhance my understanding of military intelligence. With an emphasis on interrogation in human intelligence. I had learned in the march that i had only 25 hrs for community service so everyday of the week i have been volunteering at an after school program at an elementary from 1-6 so i should have my hours in no time. So that's what i have been doing this month.

Independent Component 2

Blog 19:  Independent Component 2

Content:

LITERAL
(a) Include this statement: “I Daniel John Bustamante, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 31hours 30 mins of work.”
(b) Cite your source regarding who or what article or book helped you complete the independent component.

c) Update your Independent Component 2 Log (which should be under your Senior Project Hours link)
(d) Explain what you completed.
I completed threat assessments and an order of battle using MI techniques and the intel cycle.
INTERPRETIVE
Defend your work and explain the component's significance and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.   Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.
I had to complete a threat assessment and order of battle. I used my skills learned from mentorship and research to complete the task. Each one if done correctly can take an exceedingly long time to complete. below are links to both the order of battle and the threat assessment.

APPLIED
How did the component help you answer your EQ? Please include specific examples to illustrate how it helped.

It allowed me to see if a weak requirement is drafted and used the report or any work following will be also weak and unreliable and cause the failure of the mission. The independent component has opened my eyes to see the directing phase is the most important phase and not the processing phase as i had established before. Directing phase not only took me longer to complete but was the most decisive time during my independent component.

March Post

Didn't do much with my mentor this month because he is on vacation. So I have been working on Independent component. For independent component i am working on threat assessments and order of battles both are common for intel troops to complete especially analysts. Analysts is what i am focusing on the most for my research and entire senior project as a whole. Hopefully my mentor is back soon so i can finish up my hours for mentorship.

Blog 17: Third Answer

1.  What is your EQ?
What is the most important phase in completing the Military intelligence's mission?
2.  What is your first answer? (In complete thesis statement format)

The most important phase is processing because this is the phase you analyze the intel and decide what intel can be used. If you pick the wrong intel you will fail to complete the requirement.

3.  What is your second answer? (In complete thesis statement format)

The mission is the most important because without the requirement you cannot fulfill the needs of the CO and never even start the entire cycle.

4. What is your third answer? The planning and supervising phase is the most important phase because without the CO constantly watching his men they will not stay on task and will fail to complete the requirement.

4.  List three reasons your answer is true with a real-world application for each.
There is really only one reason which is with leadership from the CO the men will not finish and fulfill the requirement. So a good real life example is when you work in a group and the leader is absent everyone does there own thing which leads to a bad grade.
5.  What printed source best supports your answer?

N, M. A G O. "FM 34-52 Intelligence Interrogation." FM 34-52 Intelligence Interrogation 2 (1992): 1-178. Sept. 1992. Web. 21 Aug. 2014.

Army, Department Of The. "Chapter 10." (2006): 1-384. FM 2-22.3 Human Intelligence Collector Operations. Department of Army, 6 Sept. 2006. Web. 4 Sept. 2014.

"Military." FMI 3-07.22 Appendix D Order of Battle Factors. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Dec. 2014.

6.  What other source supports your answer?
My Mentor

7.  Tie this together with a  concluding thought.
This answer glorifies the officers and it should but the men under them and the officers both make the intelligence branch what it is today.

Extra Post

For the month of February being a shorter month I have not seen my mentor that much. So to make up for that I read the manuals given to me by my mentor to extend my knowledge further in the field. I am so lucky to have those manuals I being taught what men being trained to be in the intel branch are taught too.

Answer 2

The directing phase is the most important because without the requirement you cannot fulfill the needs of the CO and never even start the entire cycle.

4.  List three reasons your answer is true with a real-world application for each.
If a problem starts in the middle east a requirement must be drafted to answer the problem. If a answer is not above par the mission will fail.  There is only one reason this is such an important answer because if there is no question there is no intel process and lives will be lost this is so major.
5.  What printed source best supports your answer?

N, M. A G O. "FM 34-52 Intelligence Interrogation." FM 34-52 Intelligence Interrogation 2 (1992): 1-178. Sept. 1992. Web. 21 Aug. 2014.

Army, Department Of The. "Chapter 10." (2006): 1-384. FM 2-22.3 Human Intelligence Collector Operations. Department of Army, 6 Sept. 2006. Web. 4 Sept. 2014.

"Military." FMI 3-07.22 Appendix D Order of Battle Factors. N.p., n.d. Web. 12 Dec. 2014.

6.  What other source supports your answer?
My Mentor and my cousin in the marines.

7.  Tie this together with a  concluding thought.
I think the independent Component helped me a lot and interview 3 to come up with this new answer.

(c) Update your hours in your Senior Project Hours link. Make sure it is clearly labeled with hours for individual sessions as well as total hours.
·         (d) Explain what you completed.
    • I completed two threat Assessments one on Indonesia and the other on Baghdad, Iraq.
·         INTERPRETIVE
Defend your work and explain its significance to your project and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.   Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.
    •  It allowed me to gain experience in my main job I would do if I was an analyst in the Intel field. Threat assessments are very important and no false information can be given you must find the balance between your educated opinion and facts. Threat assessments can take a day weeks months it depends on the level of quality the assessment is at. Also I went by the Intel cycle which enhances the assessment but also makes the process longer.  Below is a link to my threat assessment.
·         APPLIED
How did the component help you understand the foundation of your topic better?  Please include specific examples to illustrate this.
    • What I did differently in this scenario I had to make the requirement where usually I am served the requirement. It was extremely hard to draft the mission where I have had experience in only answering the question. My current EQ does not cover that part of MI it has made me think to draft a new EQ.  Also it made me see how important the collecting phase is in the Intel cycle I had to go back and collect more intel because I was not just collecting whatever but I was only collecting a little bit of intel which is more of processing phase. So I might change my answer to my EQ to collecting phase is the most important phase due to the ease it gave me when I collected a whole lot of intel and it enabled me to see multiple paths to answer the requirement not just one path.

Blog 11: Holiday Project Update

Content:

1.  It is important to consistently work on your senior project, whether it is break or we are in school.  What did you do over the break with your senior project?  i went to see my mentor on the 23rd to make sure he verified my hours i mentored with him, but did not stay long i had preparations to make for Christmas. That was the only thing i did related to senior project over "break".

2.  What was the most important thing you learned from what you did, and why?  What was the source of what you learned? like i explained in the previous question didnt do much work related to senior project during "break", due to the holidays.

3.  If you were going to do a 10 question interview on questions related to answers for your EQ, who would you talk to and why? My mentor Staff Sergeant Felix because i based my EQ off of what he has taught me so if he could answer those question and agree with the EQ i picked i know i am on the right track.
